Eighteen Western Plains Junior High and High School students attended the comedic musical, "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," on Saturday, October 7th, at Felton Start Theatre on the Fort Hays State University campus. FHSU kept up the fine tradition of excellence in the theatre arts, celebrating more than 50 years of performances at Felton Start Theatre. Students were able to experience many of the arts at this production: singing, acting, orchestra performance, costume design, set design, and lighting. They enjoyed a black comedy with a surprise ending (which actually made them gasp), as well as superb acting and singing. A fun time was had by all!
The students were sponsored by Denice Flax (Music Director), Cheryl Rein (WP South Teacher), and Nayeli Gomez (WP South School Secretary). Mrs. Flax would like to thank Mrs. Rein and Mrs. Gomez for their time and help, as well as their constant support of the WP Music Program!
WPJH Cheerleaders will be doing a fundraiser to help "red out" the stands at the October 13, Homecoming football game. Selling cheer poms and glow sticks, see image for details.
Spirit Week is coming up next week. Here is what you need to know to be prepared. We can't wait to see your Bobcat Spirit. #BobcatStrong
Miss Tiffany's North & South STEM classes have been busy learning exciting things this year.
K-3 are learning about healthy habits. They have learned the proper way to brush and floss their teeth, wash their hands and to keep from spreading germs, how to pick healthy foods and snacks, and interesting facts about eyes. They are rounding out their modules by creating Healthy Habit Story books.
4th and 5th grades have been learning about DNA, genetics, and heredity. They have created DNA models out of pipe cleaners, extracted DNA from strawberries, interviewed family members about genetic traits, how to fill out Punnett squares, and will be ending their module by learning about fingerprints.
Junior High has been busy learning about all types of energy. They are learning how energy works, how we can conserve energy, and whether it is renewable or not. They are currently creating Penguin Habitats where they have to build the habitat to keep a Penguin shaped ice cube from melting under a heat lamp.
Mrs. Tocohua's preschool class has been learning about body parts (hand, foot, nose, ears, eyes) this week. Today they finished the week by tracing their bodies.
Sept. 11 is School Picture Day, We look forward to seeing you in your nicest outfits. 😉😉
Mrs. Wittman’s 4/5 class has been learning about energy transfer this week in Science. Today they built solar ovens and made s’mores. Heat energy from the sun melted the chocolate and marshmallows inside the solar ovens. Students enjoyed their tasty treats to celebrate all the learning they’ve done this week!
South 2nd and 3rd graders learned about their amazing brains this week, and made these "thinking caps" (their name for them--clever!)!
K-1 did a fun writing activity that involved solving a mystery case of the missing Scribble Spot. During SEL, K-1 colored and created emotion sticks and Mrs. A brought out the mini Spots to discuss the relations of emotions to colors. During writing, Mrs. A and her students realized that Scribble Spot was missing, so they had a mystery to solve. In order to solve the mystery they had to form a question, list the names of suspects, draw out a plan to find Scribble Spot, find clues, and track Scribble Spot The students used their emotion sticks to describe what they were feeling, they realized that they can have mixed emotions to events. The students worked hard to solve the case and to their surprise, the culprit was novother than Mrs. A! Scribble Spot was safely found in the tub of desk drum noodles, but could Mrs. A do this to Scribble Spot?!?
Scribble Spot is one the learning tools K-1 uses to identify and help regulate emotions, along with using the district chosen curriculums.
After waiting a whole week of looking at pool noodles, K-1 finally got to use them in action during one of their movement breaks.
Oops! There was a mix-up on the school calendar picture day is not his coming Monday. School Picture Day for fall photos will be held on Monday, September 11th.

PEP BAND BOOT CAMP -- On Monday, August 14, 2023, Western Plains 6th Graders participated in Pep Band Boot Camp to help them prepare for their first year in Pep Band. They spent a full day at South Elementary practicing the fight song, "The Star Spangled Banner," and timeout shorts. We also had fun on breaks: an outside recess, a taco bar lunch, and line dancing. We ended the day with homemade ice cream.
These kids not only devoted the practice time on Monday, they also attended summer school band. They are talented musicians who enjoy music and being involved in their school!
At the end of this school year, Western Plains will complete its 20th year as a school district. Our theme for this year was submitted by Asa Cole, a 6th Grader, and it was approved by the Board of Education in July.
Western Plains' theme for our 20th year is:
20 years of teaching
240 months of school work
7304 days of lifelong learning
175,320 hours of countless memories
and THE BEST IS YET TO COME!
WE ARE WESTERN PLAINS!
#BOBCAT STRONG!
Asa's favorite subject in school is math, so it's not surprising that his theme was centered around the math of 20 years. Asa is a student who is very involved in school. He enjoys participating in Scholars Bowl, athletics, Band, Choir, and school events. We thank Asa for his school pride and for his clever idea to help us celebrate 20 years of excellence in education!
